SpaceX Reportedly Paid $250,000 to Settle Sexual Harassment Accusation against Elon Musk

SpaceX paid $250,000 to settle Elon Musk’s sexual harassment claim.

An insider revealed Thursday that SpaceX paid $250,000 in 2018 to settle charges that CEO Elon Musk sexually propositioned a flight attendant aboard one of the company’s corporate planes, in a tale Musk described as a “politically driven attack job.”

The insider claimed that a flight attendant informed a friend that Musk propositioned her in his private cabin during a journey to London in 2016, citing unpublished papers and emails, as well as a declaration signed by the flight attendant’s friend—neither of whom were named by Insider.

According to Insider, who interviewed the friend and saw the friend’s confession, Musk allegedly “exposed his genitals” to the attendant, caressed her thigh, and suggested he would buy her a horse if she gave him an “erotic massage” (Insider said the flight attendant declined to comment).

According to Insider, the attendant informed her friend that her work shifts were shortened after she denied Musk’s claimed advances, giving her the idea that she was being punished.

While Musk did not clarify which allegations he was referring to in his tweets, he told Insider that there was “a lot more to this story” and that he needed more time to reply to the assertions made in the article, according to the site.

According to the piece, Musk replied to Insider, “If I were inclined to participate in sexual harassment, this is unlikely to be the first time it comes to light in my entire 30-year career.” According to the outlet, he also called the article a “politically motivated hit job.”

According to Insider, the publication date was pushed back after Musk sought additional time to answer, but he never responded to the charges. “I’m not going to comment on any settlement agreements,” said Christopher Cardaci, SpaceX’s legal affairs vice president, according to Insider.

Musk then tweeted, without mentioning the allegation, that “for the record, those outlandish charges are totally incorrect.”

He wrote, “The attacks against me should be seen through a political perspective – this is their normal (despicable) strategy.”

The Insider claim comes as Musk, who is also the CEO of Tesla, is attempting to acquire the social media giant Twitter. Musk linked the uproar to his deal to buy Twitter on Friday morning. “There is nothing to report in my 30-year career, throughout the entire MeToo era, but as soon as I announce I aim to restore free speech to Twitter and vote Republican, there is…” he said.

According to Insider, the alleged event took place in Musk’s room aboard a SpaceX jet on a voyage to London in late 2016, after the world’s richest man requested a “full body massage.”

CNBC contacted Musk and SpaceX for comment on the allegations but did not receive a response right away.

In response to a request for comment, an Insider spokeswoman said, “We stand behind our report, which is based on documents and interviews and speaks for itself.”

A document written by a friend of the flight attendant details the claims revealed on Thursday.

According to Insider, the declaration was produced to support a complaint filed by the woman’s lawyer with SpaceX’s human resources department in 2018 after she believed her job chances at the firm were dwindling after she refused to engage in sexual contact with Musk.

In the piece, neither the buddy who spoke with Insider nor the woman who declined to be interviewed by the publication was named. According to the story, as part of her settlement with SpaceX, the flight attendant signed a nondisclosure agreement.
