A nonprofit based in Dubai has raised funding for a farm in Malawi that will feed 300 children for the rest of their lives.

Children will receive assistance with their educational needs in addition to hot meals and a safe place to stay.

Gulf for Good, a UAE-based non-profit that supports sustainable development initiatives in poor countries, gathered the cash through its Ramadan campaign ‘Fund a Farm,’ in which the community was urged to donate ‘virtual farm produce’ to help fund a full farm in Malawi.

“The funds raised will be used to buy a farm that will supply adequate food for the 300 children sponsored by the Sparkle Foundation on a daily basis,” said Anne Edmondson, the foundation’s chair. “Not only will it provide food, but it will also allow us to educate and encourage members of the community to pursue farming as a source of income.”

Despite its economic improvements, Malawi remains one of the world’s poorest countries, according to Edmondson.

Sparkle Foundation supports youngsters with their scholastic needs in addition to providing a hot meal and a safe place to stay.

“The work of the Sparkle Foundation is commendable in that it provides care for 300 of the community’s most vulnerable youngsters. They provide a preschool for smaller children as well as an after-school program for older students who attend the government school “she stated.

Edmondson continued: “For many of the children, the only time they get a hot meal is when they are on the foundation’s property. Over the spring break, Gulf for Good went to volunteer at the Sparkle Foundation, where we taught some teachers. However, we realized that we needed to do more to empower the community, so we decided to seek funds to purchase property on which to grow food.

“Right now, we’re working on getting the land.” The community will be able to sustain itself with the fruit from the farm once it is up and operating.”

Over the course of its 20-year history in the UAE, Gulf for Good has organized over 95 challenges with over 1,663 participants from 29 countries in support of 61 children’s charities, raising over $4 million to build schools, children’s homes, hospitals, and more changing the lives of countless children around the world.

Despite the pandemic, Gulf for Good managed to raise more than Dh500,000 for children in need in 2020 and gave emergency aid and Covid support to its charity initiatives when they were most required.

During the epidemic, Gulf for Good also excelled at broadening its offering, launching its charity retail store Thrift for Good, which resells pre-loved products and donates proceeds to Gulf for Good charitable programs.
