Raj Subramaniam, alias Rajesh Subramaniam, an Indian American, has been named the new CEO of FedEx, the US multinational delivery company. On June 1, he will succeed Frederick W Smith, the company’s founder, chairman, and CEO.

FedEx is set to appoint an Indian-born Raj Subramaniam as its new Chief Operating Officer (CEO) after Frederick W Smith, the company’s chairman and CEO, steps down on June 1. Smith will now serve as the executive chairman of the courier service company.

Raj Subramaniam is the company’s president and chief operating officer at the moment. He will continue to serve on the FedEx board of directors, where he was elected in 2020.

• Raj Subramaniam, 56, joined FedEx in 1991 and has held various marketing and management positions in the United States and around the world. He eventually rose to the position of chief marketing and communications officer, as well as president and CEO of FedEx Express, the world’s largest express transportation company. In 2019, he was promoted to president and chief operating officer.

• He has held the position of President of FedEx Express in Canada, as well as several other management and marketing positions in Asia and the United States. From 1996 to 2003, he was the Vice-President of Marketing for FedEx Express in the Asia Pacific region before being promoted to Regional President of Canada. He was promoted to Senior Vice President of FedEx Services in 2006. He joined the parent company in 2013 as EVP, marketing and communication, before being promoted to President and COO in 2019.

Raj Subramaniam is from Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala but now resides in Memphis, Tennessee, which serves as FedEx’s global headquarters. He graduated with honors from IIT Bombay with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, Syracuse University with a master’s degree in chemical engineering, and The University of Texas at Austin with an MBA.

He is a director of FedEx Corporation, First Horizon Corporation, the US Chamber of Commerce’s China Center Advisory Board, FIRST, the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum, and the US-China Business Council. He also serves on the Advisory Committee on Supply Chain Competitiveness of the International Trade Administration (ACSCC).

Raj Subramaniam received the IIT Bombay’s Distinguished Alumnus Award for his achievements in business. In 2016, he was inducted into the Fogelman College of Business and Economics Hall of Fame and named a Distinguished Friend of the University of Memphis.
